As a police officer, Ben Lawson witnessed heartbreaking stories from friends, family, and fellow Canadians about homeowners losing money to unethical and scamming contractors.

Just as common were stories of contractors trying to get paid for their honest day’s work. In the worst cases, they are putting liens on properties to hopefully, one day, get some form of payment.

With the interests of both parties at the forefront, Ben became increasingly curious about how to create a system to simultaneously protect the investment of both the project owner and the contractor.

The dream behind CashGuard began. As with all good dreams, they take a team to work.

Enter Bryan Cornies, co-founder and CTO. Bryan brings a wealth of experience in the software industry having worked for some of the largest and most innovative technology companies in Calgary.

Although no business forms overnight, the pair began to work through the roadblocks. Ben, with his idea and desire to solve the problem, Bryan, with his technical ability and creativity, a long and methodical process began. And now, here they are, a dream and a plan to protect your CASH and GUARD your work.

Over the last two years, they have dedicated their time to their careers and their families, all while working the CashGuard dream.

 

Meet the Team

Ben Lawson / CEO

Born and raised in the prairie provinces, I have grown up with and held tightly to my principled roots. Calling Calgary home for the last 17 years, my wife and I have been blessed to raise our three children with a community we love. I have 15 years of law enforcement experience at various levels while being on multiple teams. Through this, I have understood the need to mitigate disputes before they become too big to resolve. With a Bachelor of Arts in Justice Studies through Royal Roads University and a certificate in mediation, I have always strived to use wisdom to resolve issues. From this moral and varied background, I dreamt of the idea of CashGuard and found the perfect partner in Bryan to help bring it alive!

Bryan Cornies / CTO

I handle the product development and other tech stuff for CashGuard. I was born and raised in Calgary and continue to proudly call it my home along with my wife, two kids, and two dogs. I have a Bachelor of Science in Software Engineering from the University of Calgary and nearly 2 decades of industry experience. The various positions I have had in the software industry have given me a broad set of skills and perspectives. Creating elegant, useful solutions to real world problems is what I love to do. I am thrilled about the unique opportunity and challenge of bringing CashGuard to life!

John Greenhow / CMO

I've worked as a marketing and sales leader for 9 years. I come to CashGuard with marketing experience from several industries and methods, from ecommerce to events. I'm obsessed with customer acquisition and I like to approach marketing with honesty, integrity, and align myself with businesses that serve people earnestly. I believe in CashGuard because it has an important mission to protect homeowners and small business owners equally. Outside of my career I'm proud to be a father and a husband. My wife and I have a young family and we try to live by simple principles to lead a healthy and vibrant family.
